Available in two models, the Stratus 1S and Stratus 2S, these units represent the latest enhancements in speed and the underlying technology that has made Stratus the top selling ADS-B unit since it’s inception.
The naming of these units is patterned after the Apple iPhone series. The “S” in the name generally refers to a speed increase in the processor and other minor enhancements, but not a complete redesign of the unit itself.
The Stratus 2S retains the same styling as it’s predecessor, the Stratus 2, with most of the changes found under the hood. Boasting a faster processor, improved USB Type-C power connector and a built-in Pressure Altitude Sensor. The Pressure Altitude Sensor enables ForeFlight’s Pressure Altitude instrument in the heads-up display as well as the Cabin Altitude Advisor feature.
The Stratus 1S, an update to the original black Stratus, looks visually similar to the Stratus 2S, but internally is modeled after the original Stratus unit. This budget-minded update provides a solid performing single band, ADS-B receiver without some of the bells and whistles found in the Stratus 2S.
Still considering which unit to buy? Consider this: for an additional $350, the Stratus 2S provides a very-responsive backup attitude indicator (via the built-in Attitude Heading Reference System (AHRS) chip), which is a small price to pay for such an important, life-saving feature. Tied-in with the Synthetic Vision upgrade, available from ForeFlight for $25/year and the 2D backup attitude indicator becomes a 3D virtual world.
Already own a Stratus 2? Your unit will continue to be supported by ForeFlight with firmware updates and App support.
Own an original Stratus and considering an upgrade? The Stratus 2S, with it’s enhanced speed and sensors, may be the unit for you.
Both units begin shipping soon and will be on-display at AirVenture later this month.
